▪ 2005American actor (b. May 22, 1941, Los Angeles, Calif.—d. March 7, 2004, Los Angeles), had a versatility as a performer that made him equally convincing in such varied roles as Diahann Carroll's boyfriend in the sitcom Julia (1968), a sharecropper struggling to take care of his family in Sounder (1972), baseball player Roy Campanella in the TV film It's Good to Be Alive (1974), and the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., in the TV miniseries King (1978). His performance as a federal judge in a guest appearance on the TV series Picket Fences won him an Emmy Award in 1995.
