Webster, Michael Lewis

Webster, Michael Lewis
▪ 2003
“Mike”
American football player (b. March 18, 1952, Tomahawk, Wis.—d. Sept. 24, 2002, Pittsburgh, Pa.), anchored a formidable offensive line that helped the Pittsburgh Steelers win four Super Bowl championships in the 1970s. A graduate of the University of Wisconsin whose smallish stature belied his strength, he was regarded as one of the best centres in the game. He was elected to the Pro Bowl nine times with the Steelers (1974–88), but he completed his career with the Kansas City Chiefs (1989–90). The relentless beating he received without complaint during his playing days was believed to have left him brain damaged, and following his retirement he suffered many health and personal problems. Webster was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1997.
