▪ 2000

English cricketer who was a formidable opening batsman for Lancashire (1933–64, captain 1954–59) and England (1936–56) and who, despite having lost some of his best years to military service during World War II, amassed 34,101 first-class runs (average 42.67) and 76 centuries, including 2,569 runs (average 42.81) and six centuries in 37 Test matches. His opening partnership of 359, set with Len Hutton against South Africa in 1948–49, still stood as the England record in 1999.
