Australian Aboriginal artist (b. 1925?, Minjilpiri, N.Terr., Australia—d. Feb. 12, 2001, Papunya, N.Terr.), was a pioneer of modern Aboriginal abstract art; his innovative works, which combined intricate calligraphic lines and tiny dots, drew international praise and defined the Aboriginal style known as “dot painting.” In the 1960s Tjupurrula was transported with other nomadic Aboriginals from their tribal lands to Papunya, a bleak government settlement west of Alice Springs. There, encouraged by a local white schoolteacher, many residents began painting acrylic artwork and decorated trinkets. In 1997 one of Tjupurrula's early paintings,
Water Dreaming at Kalipinya (1972), sold for a record price for Aboriginal art, A$206,000 (U.S. $263,145); the painting set another record three years later when it sold for more than double that price. Tjupurrula, however, who originally sold the painting for A$150 (
about U.S. $75), struggled for years with alcoholism and poor health and died in poverty.
