British explorer (b. June 3, 1910, Addis Ababa, Abyssinia [now in Ethiopia]—d. Aug. 24, 2003, Croyden, Surrey, Eng.), spent most of his life in remote regions of Africa and Asia living with the denizens of those places in the last moments before Western civilization reached and forever changed them. He twice crossed the Rubʿ al-Khali of Arabia and later spent time in Iraq, Persia (
Iran),
Pakistan,
Afghanistan, and
Kenya. Thesiger chronicled his experiences in a number of books, notably
Arabian Sands (1959) and
The Marsh Arabs (1964), and his photography was as well respected as his writing. He was knighted in 1995.
