▪ 2004Robert Langford ModiniAmerican actor (b. Jan. 13, 1919, Los Angeles, Calif.—d. May 14, 2003, Los Angeles), had a notable six-decade-long career that saw him go from giving Deanna Durbin her first screen kiss in First Love (1939) to portraying more substantial characters in films that included The High and the Mighty (1954) and Written on the Wind (1956). The role that cemented his fame, however, was that of crime fighter Eliot Ness in the television series The Untouchables (1959–63), for which he won an Emmy Award in 1960. He parodied his stalwart-character type in the disaster spoof Airplane! (1980) but later returned to it to be the serious host and narrator of the TV series Unsolved Mysteries (1987–2002).
