      Soviet writer who penned nonfiction and nostalgic novels, poetry, and short stories but was perhaps best known for his campaign to preserve prerevolutionary Russian art and architecture, most notably historic Russian Orthodox churches and icons (b. June 14, 1924—d. April 4, 1997).
