      British-born Canadian poet, scholar, and witch who published scores of books, founded the creative writing department at the University of Victoria, B.C., cofounded the Malahat Review literary journal, and publicly promoted his belief in witchcraft (b. Oct. 12, 1925—d. Aug. 27, 1997).
