Savage, John Patrick

Savage, John Patrick
▪ 2004

British-born Canadian politician and physician (b. May 28, 1932, Newport, Wales—d. May 13, 2003, N.S.), ended 17 years of Progressive Conservative rule when he was elected the Liberal premier of Nova Scotia in 1993; he was the first premier of the province since confederation not to have been born in Canada. Savage's tenure was marked by turbulence; he slashed government spending and jobs and faced opposition within his own party when he refused to approve patronage jobs. When he resigned in 1997, following an opinion poll that showed that he had only a 19% approval rating among Nova Scotians, he returned to medicine and was instrumental in establishing medical centres and educational programs in Africa. He also worked extensively in Nicaragua and El Salvador. Three days before his death, he was named an Officer of the Order of Canada and was cited for his compassion and service to the less fortunate.
