Aug. 9, 2005, New York City), examined the lives and experiences of modern women as they coped with loneliness, love, and their sexuality. Her best-known book, Looking for Mr. Goodbar (1975; filmed 1977)—inspired by a New York City schoolteacher's murder at the hands of a man she had picked up in a singles bar—became a best seller. Another best seller was August (1983).
