British chemist (b. Dec. 6, 1920, Stainforth, Yorkshire, Eng.—d. Aug. 31, 2002, Canterbury, Eng.), was corecipient with Ronald G.W. Norrish, his colleague and mentor at the University of Cambridge, and West German physicist Manfred Eigen of the 1967 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for their studies in flash photolysis, a technique for observing the intermediate stages of very fast chemical reactions by subjecting a gas or liquid to short bursts of light that disturb its molecular equilibrium and allow the resulting intermediates to be analyzed spectroscopically. After matriculating at the University of Leeds (1938–41) and serving in the Royal Navy (1941–45), Porter went to Emmanuel College,
Cambridge, and studied under Norrish. Their collaboration lasted until the mid-1950s. Porter was on the faculty of the University of Sheffield (1955–66). He held numerous other appointments, including director of the Royal Institution of Great Britain (1966–85), president of the Royal Society (1985–90), chancellor of the University of Leicester (1986–95), and chairman of the Centre for Photomolecular Sciences (1990–2002). In the 1960s Porter began appearing in a succession of television programs, through which he sought to present science to the public, especially young people, in an innovative and challenging way. He was knighted in 1972, appointed to the Order of Merit in 1989, and granted a life peerage in 1990.
