      American singer (b. Nov. 30, 1953, Oakland, Calif.—d. April 11, 2006, Santa Monica, Calif.), formed the successful pop group the Pointer Sisters with her three older siblings and served as leading vocalist on several of their most exuberant recordings. Pointer began performing in San Francisco nightclubs with her sister Bonnie during the late 1960s, and by 1972 sisters Anita and Ruth had completed the quartet. Known for their sassy style and lavish 1940s costumes, the Pointer Sisters reached the height of their popularity during the 1970s and '80s. Their debut album, The Pointer Sisters (1973), spawned their first hit song, “Yes We Can Can.” The group went on to win Grammy Awards for the song “Fairytale” (1974) and for the singles “Automatic” and “Jump (for My Love)” from the album Break Out (1984).
