Passmore, John Arthur

      Australian philosopher (b. Sept. 9, 1914, Manly, N.S.W., Australia—d. July 25, 2004, Canberra, Australia), was a leading figure in the field of applied philosophy, in which philosophical research is applied to practical matters, such as medical ethics and the environment. He wrote a score of books, and his best-known work, A Hundred Years of Philosophy (1957), was a significant contribution to the study of the history of philosophy. Passmore studied at the University of Sydney on a scholarship and taught there, at the University of Otago, Dunedin, N.Z. (1950–55), and at the Australian National University (1955–79), as well as serving as a visiting scholar at universities in Britain and North America.
