▪ 2004British stage designer (b. July 11, 1930, London, Eng.—d. Oct. 10, 2003, Much Birch, Herefordshire, Eng.), created meticulously researched and beautifully imagined sets for television, opera, theatre, and ballet and was regarded as among the best designers of the late 20th century. She began her career at the BBC in 1955. Perhaps her most admired work was for the ballet; her 1976 collaboration with Sir Frederic Ashton on A Month in the Country was particularly notable. She wrote several books with her historian husband, Sir Roy Strong. Oman was made CBE in 1986.
