      French character actor (b. Oct. 1, 1930, Lille, France—d. Nov. 23, 2006, Paris, France), was a successful stage and screen actor in France for more than five decades; equally adept at drama and comedy, he appeared in some 150 films and was a two-time winner of the César Award for best actor—for Le Vieux Fusil (1975) and La Vie et rien d'autre (1989). Outside France he was best known for his work in two Italian films—the Academy Award-winning Cinema Paradiso (1988), in which he portrayed the projectionist, and the Oscar-nominated Il postino (1994), in which he appeared as the reclusive Chilean poet Pablo Neruda. Noiret's English-language films included the war movie The Night of the Generals (1967), the romantic farce The Assassination Bureau (1969), and Alfred Hitchcock's Topaz (1969), for which he was named best supporting actor by the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures.
