Russian conductor who turned to teaching when Soviet anti-Semitism thwarted his conducting career; as a professor at the Leningrad Conservatory (now the St. Petersburg State Conservatory) from 1929 until his death, he influenced generations of conductors, stressing the importance of gesture and expressiveness to his students. Musin instructed such prominent maestros as Valery Gergyev, Yury Temirkanov, Rudolf Barshai, and Yakov Kreizberg (b. Jan. 6, 1904, Kostroma, Russia—d. June 6, 1999, St. Petersburg, Russia).
