      Bengali poet (b. Feb. 12, 1919, Krishnanagar, Bengal, India—d. July 8, 2003, Kolkata [Calcutta], India), wrote poetry of social commitment. His voice, first informed by his political idealism, evolved into a personal, thoughtful, and deeply empathetic style. After the partition of India, he gave hope to a generation of Bengalis. He received two of India's highest literary awards, and his work was translated into English and Russian.
