He wrote arts pieces, theatre reviews, and interviews for The Times of London, appeared (1968–71) on BBC2's program Late Night Line-Up, was arts editor and drama critic (1975–89) for Punch magazine and drama critic (1990–2001) for The Spectator, among the highlights of his career. His biographies included A Talent to Amuse (1969), about the playwright Noël Coward, and Robert, My Father (1993), about his father, the actor Robert Morley. His autobiography, Asking for Trouble, appeared in 2002.
