was nearly ubiquitous in the theatre scene in London, writing reviews for an assortment of newspapers and magazines and appearing on several television and radio shows in addition to writing many biographies of figures in the theatre. He wrote arts pieces, theatre reviews, and interviews for The Times of London, appeared (1968–71) on BBC2's program Late Night Line-Up, was arts editor and drama critic (1975–89) for Punch magazine and drama critic (1990–2001) for The Spectator, among the highlights of his career. His biographies included A Talent to Amuse (1969), about the playwright Noël Coward, and Robert, My Father (1993), about his father, the actor Robert Morley. His autobiography, Asking for Trouble, appeared in 2002.
