played bebop alto saxophone with a vivid tone, a lyrical style, and passionate feeling. A teenaged prodigy influenced by Charlie Parker, Morgan had become well known among modern-jazz stylists in Los Angeles by the first recording session he led (1955). He was also a heroin addict, however, and spent most of the next 30 years imprisoned for addiction-related crimes. After he reemerged in 1985, he became noted as a leading improviser on many albums and for his extensive concert and nightclub tours. In 1987 he performed in the Off-Broadway musical Prison-Made Tuxedos, which was based on his life.
