Mishin, Vasily Pavlovich

Mishin, Vasily Pavlovich
▪ 2002

Soviet rocket scientist (b. Jan. 18, 1917, Orekhovo-Zuyevo, Russia—d. Oct. 10, 2001, Moscow, Russia), was named the chief designer of the Soviet lunar program when Sergey P. Korolyov died in 1966. Despite his accomplishments as an engineer on the Sputnik satellite program, Mishin lacked his charismatic predecessor's knack of maneuvering within the political bureaucracy. Faced with insufficient funding and a stifling level of secrecy imposed upon the Soviet space agency, Mishin's team failed to beat the U.S. in the race to the Moon. Mishin was removed from his post in 1974 and thereafter disappeared from public view (for many years he was even airbrushed out of official photographs). He reemerged in the 1980s.
