In football he played in 84 matches for Arsenal (1951–55), 14 matches for Bristol City (1955), and 1 international match (1951) against Austria. Milton's cricket career was more substantial. He was a regular in the Gloucestershire side from 1948 to 1974, opening the batting and contributing medium-pace bowling and close fielding. In 1958 he played in two Test matches against New Zealand, scoring his only Test century (104 not out) in his debut. He was less successful in two Tests against Australia on the 1958–59 tour and finished his Test career against India in 1959. In first-class cricket Milton played in 620 matches, scoring 32,150 runs (for Gloucestershire second only to Walter Hammond's 33,664) at an average of 33.73, with 56 centuries and a high score of 170. He also took 79 wickets (average 45.94) and made 758 catches. In his six Tests, he scored 204 runs (average 25.50). Milton in 1959 was named one of Wisden's five Cricketers of the Year.
