Aug. 19, 2001, Kenmore, Wash.), was co-developer of the first vaccine against rubella (German measles), refinement of which resulted in the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine; he contributed to textbooks, published over 100 scientific papers, and achieved worldwide acclaim for his research on infectious diseases and vaccines to protect against them.
