Mauro Ramos de Oliveira
Brazilian association football (soccer) player (b. Aug. 30, 1930, Pocos de Caldas, Braz.—d. Sept. 18, 2002, Pocos de Caldas), was a centre-half for Brazil in 23 international matches between 1949 and 1965; his career peaked in 1962 when he applied his defensive skills and cunning tactics as captain of the World Cup champion team. From 1948 to 1960 Mauro played professionally for the São Paulo club, which won four state championships (1948, 1949, 1953, and 1957) and the 1960 Brazil Cup. He then was transferred to Santos, which won five straight league titles and both the South American Club and World Club cups in 1962 and 1963. He later played in Argentina (1965–66) and Mexico (1967). Mauro died just one day after his former Brazil teammate Dida (Edvaldo Alves de Santa Rosa).
