▪ 2001American actress (b. June 19, 1928, Buffalo, N.Y.—d. June 18, 2000, Stratford, Conn.), was an award-winning actress whose work on television—most notably her roles as an aristocratic newspaper publisher on Lou Grant and as the domineering matriarch of a Mafia family on The Sopranos—earned her fame and critical praise. Marchand began her career on the stage, appearing in a number of Broadway and Off-Broadway productions during the 1950s before winning an Obie Award for her work in The Balcony (1960). She appeared on Lou Grant from 1977 to 1982, winning four consecutive Emmy Awards. In 1999 she won a Golden Globe Award for her performance on The Sopranos. Marchand also appeared in several films, including The Bostonians (1984), The Naked Gun (1988), and Sabrina (1995).
