as the Communist Party of China (CPC) boss in Beijing during the 1989 Tiananmen Square pro-democracy movement, notably advocated the military crackdown on the student-led demonstrators that ended in a massacre. Li was among a number of prominent conservatives removed from their positions by Chinese paramount leader Deng Xiaoping in a shake-up of party leadership in 1992. Li later served as vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the eighth National Congress of the CPC before retiring in 1998.
