▪ 2004“Irv”American newspaper columnist (b. July 31, 1912, Chicago, Ill.—d. Nov. 10, 2003, Chicago), became a Chicago institution by way of the celebrities, politicians, and other notables he knew and reported on in “Kup's Column,” his syndicated gossip column in the Chicago Sun-Times, which he began writing in 1943, when the paper was the Chicago Daily Times, and continued until a few days before his death. From 1959 to 1986 he also celebrated “the lively art of conversation” on his Peabody Award-winning syndicated television late-night talk show At Random (later Kup's Show).
