▪ 1998Russian-born writer and human rights activist who was imprisoned in a Soviet labour camp after he objected to Soviet troops' brutality against German civilians in occupied territory following World War II and was considered the model for a character, Lev Rubin, in Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's The First Circle; further dissident activities led to the stripping of his citizenship in 1981, and he spent the rest of his life in Germany (b. April 9, 1912—d. June 18, 1997).
