Konig, Franz Cardinal

Konig, Franz Cardinal
▪ 2005

Austrian Roman Catholic archbishop (b. Aug. 3, 1905, Rabenstein an der Pielach, Austria-Hungary [now in Austria]—d. March 13, 2004, Vienna, Austria), as archbishop of Vienna (1956–85), worked tirelessly to create ties with countries in the Soviet bloc. Consecrated cardinal by Pope John XXIII in 1958, König, who was known for his ecumenism and liberalism, sought reconciliation with other Christian churches throughout the world and became one of the most influential members of the College of Cardinals. He was a major participant in the Second Vatican Council (1962–65), pushing for greater engagement with the modern world, and was president (1965–80) of the Vatican Secretariat for Non-Believers. König was a papal candidate in 1963 and 1978 and was instrumental in the election (1978) of John Paul II, the first non-Italian pope in more than four centuries.
