Elizabeth Kedrova 

      Russian-born character actress (b. 1918/19?, Petrograd [now St. Petersburg], Russia—d. Feb. 16, 2000, Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.), was an accomplished stage and screen actress in Europe, Canada, and Hollywood but never fully escaped from being associated with her best-known role as the tragic courtesan Mme Hortense, a part that won her an Academy Award for best actress in a supporting role for the 1964 motion picture Zorba the Greek (her first English-language film) and a Tony Award for the musical adaptation, Zorba, on Broadway two decades later. Kedrova also won a French César award (1955) for her performance as a drug addict in the film Razzia sur la chnouf and an Evening Standard award (1968) for her portrayal of Mme Ranevskaya in The Cherry Orchard on the London stage.
