      Australian cricket player who was a reliable, slow off-spin bowler for Victoria and in 45 Test matches for Australia, including 17 as captain (1954-57). Johnson played first-class cricket for Victoria briefly in 1935, but he served as a fighter pilot in World War II before making his Test debut against New Zealand in 1946. In his 11-year career Johnson achieved a Test-career double, scoring 1,000 runs in Tests (average 18.51) out of a total of 4,905 first-class runs (average 22.92) and taking 109 Test wickets (average 29.19) out of a first-class total of 619 (average 23.30). Johnson was appointed M.B.E. in 1955 and was advanced to O.B.E. in 1977 and C.B.E. in 1983 (b. Dec. 8, 1917/18, North Melbourne, Australia—d. Oct. 9, 1998, Melbourne, Australia).
