▪ 2007American photographer (b. Aug. 15, 1921, San Francisco, Calif.—d. March 30, 2006, Reno, Nev.), captured images of environmentally imperiled deserts, canyons, forests, and mountains, which were published by the Sierra Club in such books as The Last Redwoods (1963), Navajo Wildlands: As Long as the Rivers Shall Run (1967), Slickrock: The Canyon Country of Southeast Utah (1971), and The Range of Light (1992). These so-called battle books illuminated the importance of wilderness preservation, and one of them, Time and the River Flowing: Grand Canyon (1964), was instrumental in warding off government plans to build dams in the Grand Canyon.
