Hume, Paul Chandler

      American music critic (b. Dec. 13, 1915, Chicago, Ill.—d. Nov. 26, 2001, Baltimore, Md.), wrote highly esteemed reviews for the Washington Post for 35 years (from 1947), taught music history at Georgetown University, Washington, D.C. (1950–77), and served as a visiting professor at Yale University (1975–83). In 1950, in a review that brought him to the attention of the general public, he infuriated Pres. Harry Truman when he expressed a less-than-complimentary opinion of a voice recital given by the president's daughter, Margaret Truman.
