American anthropologist (b. Nov. 27, 1908, New York, N.Y.—d. Dec. 20, 2005, Kittery Point, Maine), was a physical anthropologist who specialized in the establishment of population relationships through physical measurement. He was also known for his work in developing anthropological curricula and for his popular books in the field, including Mankind So Far (1944), Back of History: The Story of Our Own Origins (1954), and Mankind in the Making (1959). Howells worked as a researcher at the American Museum of Natural History from 1934 to 1939 before joining the faculty of the University of Wisconsin. He later served (1954–74) as a professor of anthropology at Harvard University. His authoritative Cranial Variation in Man: A Study by Multivariate Analysis of Patterns of Difference Among Recent Human Populations—which compared skull measurements from 17 distinct world populations—appeared in 1973. He received the Distinguished Service Award (1978) from the American Anthropological Association and the Charles R. Darwin Lifetime Achievement Award (1992) from the American Association of Physical Anthropologists. He was the grandson of both the novelist and literary critic William Dean Howells and the journalist Horace White.
