American Roman Catholic prelate (b. Oct. 11, 1920, Midland, Mich.—d. Oct. 24, 2004, Washington, D.C.), held to conservative theological policies while serving (1980–2000) as archbishop of Washington, D.C. During his tenure Hickey also took activist roles in support of gun control and nuclear disarmament and in opposition to right-wing military groups in Central America. He was respected for his openness in dealing with incidents of sexual abuse by priests. Hickey was elevated to the College of Cardinals in 1988 but was a nonvoting member following his retirement in 2000.
