▪ 2006English association football (soccer) player (b. Oct. 17, 1934, London, Eng.—d. Oct. 18, 2005, Edinburgh, Scot.), played the midfield for Fulham Football Club (1950–70) and England (1954–62). He was the first player to earn £100 (about $280) a week at a time (1958) when the average wage was £15 (about $42). Haynes was widely admired for his offensive skill, especially his long passes that dissected defenses. He played 56 games for England (22 as captain), scoring 18 goals, and was a member of the 1958 and 1962 World Cup squads. Haynes was particularly known for having spearheaded a six-game win streak in 1960–61 in which England scored 40 goals.
