“Ted” 
      American-born physicist and alleged spy who was, at age 18, the youngest member of the Manhattan Project team that developed the first atomic bombs; it was later revealed that Hall had transmitted top-secret information to contacts in Moscow (purportedly because he believed the knowledge should not be held by one country only) and thus greatly facilitated Soviet development of the atomic bomb. No charges were ever brought against him, however, and after immigrating to the U.K. in 1962, Hall conducted biological research at the University of Cambridge, from which he retired in 1984 (b. Oct. 20, 1925, New York, N.Y.—d. Nov. 1, 1999, Cambridge, Eng.).
