▪ 1997Kurdish Iraqi poet who was a pioneer of free verse in the 1950s. His realistic verse, which helped modernize Arabic poetry, often ran afoul of the Iraqi government, and he spent much of his adult life in exile. Haidari's last anthology was published just days before his death (b. Sept. 26, 1926—d. Aug. 6, 1996).
