      Guyanese-born British politician (b. Feb. 17, 1944, Georgetown, British Guiana [now Guyana]—d. April 8, 2000, London, Eng.), was a firebrand leftist, outspoken trade-union activist, and prominent campaigner for minority rights in his position as a member (1978–88) and the first black leader of a local British council authority (1985–87) and as a backbench Labour Party MP (from 1987).
