Goodman, Louis Sanford

      American pharmacologist (b. Aug. 27, 1906, Portland, Ore.—d. Nov. 19, 2000, Salt Lake City, Utah), was credited with developing the first effective anticancer chemotherapy. During World War II Goodman had been studying chemical warfare agents when he discovered that nitrogen mustard could be effective in treating cancer. In 1946 he published the first paper on the use of nitrogen mustard as an anticancer drug. Goodman also wrote, with Alfred Gilman, an influential textbook, The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics, first published in 1941. The textbook was in its ninth edition at the time of Goodman's death.
