▪ 1999German-born American modern dancer and choreographer who was a founding member (1953-65) of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, formed the Viola Farber Dance Company and choreographed most of its works (1968-85), and from 1988 directed the dance program at Sarah Lawrence College, Bronxville, N.Y.; she also taught and choreographed throughout the U.S. and in Great Britain and France (b. Feb. 25, 1931, Heidelberg, Ger.—d. Dec. 24, 1998, Bronxville).
