      ("BARNEY"), U.S. sprinter who, at the age of 30, won one gold medal and two silver medals in the 1948 Olympics; the winning 400-m relay team initially was disqualified on a ruling about Ewell's passing of the baton to a teammate, but the decision was reversed three days later (b. Feb. 25, 1918—d. April 4, 1996).
