▪ 2004Christian Rudolph Ebsen, Jr.American actor, dancer, artist, and writer (b. April 2, 1908, Belleville, Ill.—d. July 6, 2003, Torrance, Calif.), began his career dancing with his younger sister, Vilma, in nightclubs, in vaudeville, on Broadway, and in a movie before going it alone in a number of musicals. Originally cast as the Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz, he was reassigned the part of the Tin Man but could not remain in that role because he developed a reaction to the makeup. Ebsen's greatest fame came from his television roles, however, from sidekick Georgie in Walt Disney's Davy Crockett series in 1954–55 to patriarch Jed Clampett in the hit sitcom The Beverly Hillbillies (1962–71) to the title character in the detective series Barnaby Jones (1973–80). He also appeared in numerous films and other TV series and wrote songs, plays, and books.
