      Canadian-born American science-fiction writer (b. Nov. 1, 1923, Edmonton, Alta.—d. Jan. 31, 2001, Minneapolis, Minn.), was one of the world's most prominent science-fiction writers; he published more than 80 novels and some 200 short stories. Among Dickson's best-known science-fiction works were Dorsai! (1960), Soldier, Ask Not (1967), and Tactics of Mistake (1971). He also excelled in the fantasy genre; his 1976 novel The Dragon and the George won the British Fantasy Society's August Derleth Award. Dickson served as president of the Science Fiction Writers of America from 1969 to 1971.
