Di Palma, Carlo

Di Palma, Carlo
▪ 2005

Italian cinematographer (b. April 17, 1925, Rome, Italy—d. July 9, 2004, Rome), created masterful illusions of lighting and colour in order to portray an altered sense of reality in his films. He first gained international recognition for his work as director of photography on Michelangelo Antonioni's experimental films Il deserto rosso (1964; The Red Desert) and Blow-Up (1966). For several years Di Palma focused on Italian comedies, and he made his directorial debut with Teresa la ladre (1972; Teresa the Thief). Di Palma enjoyed even greater success during the 1980s and '90s when he collaborated with American filmmaker Woody Allen on 11 films, including Hannah and Her Sisters (1986), Shadows and Fog (1992), and Deconstructing Harry (1997).
