Portuguese political activist (b. Nov. 10, 1913, Coimbra, Port.—d. June 13, 2005, Lisbon, Port.), returned from exile to lead the Portuguese Communist Party (
PCP) after the Armed Forces Movement ousted Prime Minister Marcelo Caetano from power in a military coup known as the Revolution of the Carnations (1974), which ended more than 40 years of right-wing dictatorship. Known for his hard-line Stalinist beliefs, Cunhal endured long periods of exile and imprisonment during his more than 60-year involvement with the PCP. At age 17 Cunhal joined the PCP and the League of Friends of the Soviet Union. By the time he reached his early 20s, he had become a member of the party's central committee and served as a delegate to an international communist youth congress in Moscow. He served briefly in the 1974–75 provisional administration of Vasco Gonçalves (
Goncalves, Vasco dos Santos ) (
q.v.). Elected as general secretary of the PCP in 1961, Cunhal continued his leadership of the party until 1992, when he retired and was made honorary president.
