British horse racing manager (b. Jan. 19, 1924, Highclere, Hampshire, Eng.—d. Sept. 11, 2001, Winchester, Hampshire), managed a stud farm and a racing stable for his own horses and those of Queen Elizabeth II, who was also a close personal friend. Carnarvon was styled Lord Porchester until 1987, when he inherited the earldom from his father. After studying at Eton College and at the Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester, he became involved in game conservancy and thoroughbred horse breeding. He was also active in local politics and was a diligent member of the House of Lords. In 1969 Lord Carnarvon took over as the queen's racing manager, but despite some notable successes, he was never able to achieve their joint goal of winning the Derby. This failure was ascribed by some to the family “curse” wrought on his grandfather, the 5th earl, who was codiscoverer of the tomb of Tutankhamen in 1922.
