Bueno, Rodrigo Alejandro

      Argentine singer (b. May 24, 1973, Rosario, Arg.—d. June 24, 2000, Berazategui, near Buenos Aires, Arg.), was known simply as “Rodrigo” or popularly as “El Potro” (“the Stallion”); his popularity in cuarteto, a form of music popular with working-class and poor Argentines, had skyrocketed just a few months previously such that his was a top act and his compact discs became instant best-sellers. He died in a car crash at night while returning from a concert in La Plata under circumstances that many fans found suspicious; he had an elevated blood alcohol level, and his body was thrown from the car although the passengers—including his ex-wife and infant son—were relatively unharmed in the crash. Rodrigo's death occasioned massive outpourings of grief (including the suicides of four teenage girls) and a huge jump in sales of his albums. Media reports often mentioned Rodrigo's friend and sometime artistic mentor, the association football (soccer) player Diego Maradona, and referred to the death—65 years earlier to the day—of another musician of the people, tango king Carlos Gardel.
