Brockhouse, Bertram Neville
▪ 2004

Canadian physicist (b. July 15, 1918, Lethbridge, Alta.—d. Oct. 13, 2003, Hamilton, Ont.), won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1994 for developing the phenomenon of inelastic neutron scattering into a technique that enabled scientists to analyze the atomic structure of matter; he shared the award with American physicist Clifford G. Shull. After serving (1939–45) in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II, Brockhouse attended the University of British Columbia (B.A., 1947) and the University of Toronto (M.A., 1948; Ph.D., 1950). In 1950 he became a researcher at the Chalk River Nuclear Laboratory, a facility operated by Atomic Energy of Canada, and it was there that he conducted his award-winning work. In his technique a beam of neutrons all with the same energy is directed at a target material, and in the resulting collision the neutrons scatter and lose energy through inelastic collisions with atomic nuclei in the target. These energy changes are measured and analyzed to provide details about the material's atomic structure. Able to supply information not available through other analytic approaches such as X-ray crystallography, inelastic neutron scattering quickly became an important research tool and advanced the field of neutron scattering. Brockhouse utilized the technique to conduct pioneering studies on phonons (units of vibrational energy) in crystalline materials, and it was also used to study viruses and DNA. The triple-axis neutron spectrometer he created to conduct his research was later refined and became widely used. In 1962 Brockhouse joined the faculty of McMaster University in Hamilton; he became professor emeritus in 1984.
