      American gospel singer (b. Aug. 4, 1919, Choctaw county, Miss.—d. Feb. 3, 2002, Memphis, Tenn.), was a founding member and leader of the Blackwood Brothers Quartet, the first gospel group to sell one million records. Blackwood was also a well-known solo performer and was a lifelong friend and early mentor to Elvis Presley. The group released more than 200 albums and won nine Grammy Awards over the years. Blackwood was twice inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, first as a solo performer in 1974 and then with his quartet in 1998.
