Babu Chhiri Sherpa

      Nepalese mountaineer (b. June 22, 1965, Taksindu, Nepal—d. April 29, 2001, Mt. Everest), was a legendary guide who reached the summit of Mt. Everest 10 times and set two records on the world's tallest peak; in May 1999 he survived for more than 21 hours without bottled oxygen while “camping” overnight on the 8,850-m (29,035-ft) summit, and in May 2000 he ascended from Base Camp (about 5,350 m [17,600 ft]) to the summit in an astounding 16 hours 56 minutes. Babu Chhiri reportedly fell into a crevasse while taking photographs near Camp II at about 6,500 m (21,300 ft).
